The True Measure of Generosity – Gifts From the Heart

It is not the amount of a gift that matters, but the size of the heart behind it. I am reminded of a touching example from over 30 years ago, when my daughter and her husband were newly married college students. Among their friends, some were struggling financially, yet one friend gave them a wedding gift of $5, which was more than they could afford at the time. That small gift, given out of genuine sacrifice, meant far more than a larger gift from someone in a better financial position. It was the heartfelt generosity that made it truly special.

While larger gifts were certainly appreciated, it was the tender, open-hearted kindness of those who had so little to give, but gave anyway, that left the deepest impression. Witnessing such love and selflessness was a powerful reminder of what true generosity looks like.

A friend of mine frequently reminds me of how meaningful it is to receive a gift from the heart. Although limited in financial resources, she continually gives love, praise, encouragement, a listening ear, a beautifully crafted drawing, or painting. Each of these lovely gifts is so touching because of the love that is behind them.

Another moment stands out to me: my daughter, working hard to make ends meet by teaching violin lessons and working in a mall while attending school, came home for a visit. Despite her own financial struggles, she offered to buy my lunch. Only later did I realize that paying for our meal would leave her with nothing. Yet, she gave freely and lovingly.

These acts of giving, especially when it costs us something, are the purest expressions of love. I am deeply touched by such gifts, and I hope each of us can strive to be so generous. That is love in its truest form.

Amen.
