Here we are at the end of another year where we take the opportunity to release the past, change negative patterns and establish our goals for the coming year. This is a good thing, but unless you really set your intention to change those old patterns that have caused you anguish and pain, you will be just like the TV weather forecaster, Phil Connors, played by Bill Murray in the movie, Groundhog Day. [i]
Phil is arrogant and condescending at the beginning of the movie, then finds himself stuck in a time loop on February 2nd in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. He keeps repeating the same day over and over, but he is the only person aware of it. He first selfishly takes advantage of this for personal gain, but he gradually begins evaluating his life and his priorities.
The lessons that the movie provides are not discussed but they are obvious to the viewer. With each re-living of the same day, he begins changing his perspective of life, his attitude and behavior. As his intentions and motivations change, those around him begin changing their attitude toward him as well.
He finally breaks free from the loop when he leaves his self-centeredness behind, opens his heart and starts to do charitable deeds for others who are lonely or suffering. His main priority in life is no longer what’s best for him but how he can serve others.
The movie provides the lesson that we will continue repeating the same scenarios and stories until we finally get the core message or revelation and move beyond it. I was just wondering how many people suffer with the same scenarios being played out in their lives. Perhaps they blame others continually for what occurs without taking full responsibility. We all have issues that we need to get beyond and when we finally “get it” we’ll move on toward healthy relationships, peace of heart and mind, wholeness, and joy.
I love funny movies and have really enjoyed watching Bill Murray in other character portrayals. By the way, laughter is good for the soul. If you haven’t seen this movie, it might be a good one to laugh your way through an afternoon. Wishing you love and joy, Judy
