May I Live a Graceful Life

I have always loved the word “grace.” It is such a beautiful word and feels good when we say it.

It can be defined as:

  • Elegance: A refined and effortless beauty in movement or manner.
  • Poise: A calm and composed demeanor, especially under pressure.
  • Kindness: A gentle and considerate nature towards others.
  • Gratitude: Expresses gratitude in all ways.
  • Sincerity: The quality of being honest, freed from hypocrisy.

From the dictionary we find that it was first recorded in 1125–75; Middle English, from Old French, from Latin gratia “favor, kindness, esteem,” derivative of grātus “pleasing”.[i]

Grace often manifests through elegance, kindness, and poise.

Here are some examples:

o   Helping Others: Graceful individuals often extend a helping hand without expecting anything in return. For instance, someone might help an elderly person with their groceries or offer support to a colleague who is struggling with a task.

o   Handling Conflict: When faced with disagreement, a person showing grace stays calm and composed, listens actively, and responds thoughtfully rather than reacting impulsively. They prioritize understanding and resolution over winning the argument.

o   Showing Appreciation: Grace can be seen in the way people express gratitude. A heartfelt thank you note, or a sincere compliment can make others feel valued and appreciated.

o   Acts of Kindness: Simple acts of kindness, such as holding the door open for someone, offering a smile, or giving up a seat for someone in need, are everyday examples of grace in action.

o   Sincere: Their intention is pure and comes directly from the heart, wanting the highest and best for all.

From Unity World Headquarters, today’s Daily Word is Grace.  “I raise my awareness and behold the blessings of God in my life.”[ii]

Most of us would choose to feel and extend grace, to know that we are at one with the Beloved, and then to share that inherent love, dignity, poise, and kindness with the world. When I am not being graceful, it is a sign that I am not living and expressing my highest self. And so, it is.
