Did We Come With A Warranty?

On my way home from an appointment with the ophthalmologist, I said, “Okay God, I know you created us and all that, but did we come with a warranty or something, you know like a 100,000-mile warranty?”

I was thinking that if we humans are evolving and living longer, shouldn’t our parts be living longer too? What is with the thinning bones and hair, bad hips and knees, dimming eyesight and hearing, aging heart, lungs, kidneys, bladder and all the other parts that are getting older? Shouldn’t they be evolving and living longer too? I do not want you to think I am not grateful but just thinking that our parts ought to be fully functional for more years.

Here is the answer I received:

“Dear One,” God said, chuckling softly, “I did give you a warranty, it is known as grace, understanding and wisdom. It does not prevent wear and tear, but it does cover repairs of the Spirit, upgrades of the heart, and unlimited roadside assistance for your overall happiness and well-being.”

“You are right, though. You humans are living longer, dreaming bigger, and stretching the limits of what bodies were originally designed for. I made you resilient, not invincible. Your hips and knees were not built for centuries of salsa dancing or marathons across concrete jungles or jumping out of airplanes. But your laughter? Your compassion? Your capacity to love? Those are eternal.”

“And yes, evolution is working on it. Slowly. Like molasses in January. But in the meantime, I gave you creativity, science, community, and prayer, the tools to patch, heal, and transcend the limitations of being human.”

“So, while your parts may weaken, creak and groan, your Spirit can soar. And that, my beloved, is the part that never wears out.”  Yours Sincerely, God

So, we are evolving physically and learning to take care of the fabulous bodies we have been given. If I have thin bones in my feet, I will make certain I have great shoes when walking, not jumping out of airplanes. I will leave that to younger, braver folks. I will do what I can to revere and preserve this miraculous physical body that continually heals itself.

I will place my sincere effort on becoming the spiritual best that I am able. Hope you will too. With bunches of love, joy, and laughter. Judy Voght
