I Will Hold You in the Light

I have loved that eloquent Quaker phrase since the first time that I heard it. Under my breath, when hearing of a prayer need or a difficult situation, I will whisper, “I Will Hold You in the Light” and then, of course, I do just that.

What exactly does that mean though when Friends (Quakers) say, “I will hold you in the light?”

It is a common phrase to respond to the challenges of others by offering to hold them in God’s love. When used this way, it most often means to convey the idea that a person’s well-being and needs are being lifted to the Divine, Spirit or God for healing.

Well-known Quaker Clergyman Philip Gulley says,

“We Quakers say that when we intend to pray for someone, when we want for someone what God wants for them—peace and healing and well-being and soundness of mind and body and spirit. To say to someone, “I will hold you in the Light,” is the verbal equivalent of lifting them up to God, lifting them up to light and goodness, so they can have hope and peace.”

That is lovely. Within the Unity movement, we also pray for people in the same way, we pray for their best and their highest, knowing that the Universe hears every intent and prayer.  We are indeed holding them in the Light.  It also conveys that we understand the power of Light. We understand the power of one lone candle to light an entire room. Yes, we practice being a light.

When we hold someone, a situation or ourselves in the light, we are practicing a visualization and see a bathing of divine light and love.

“I will hold you in the light.”
It communicates to the person, “I see you and I see your pain.

The Divine knows what you need and is providing.”

It is a demonstration of our faith. So, for now, my dear friends, I will hold you in the light.
