When You’re Feeling Unsettled

That unsettled hum in the mind can feel so loud, can’t it? Like waves that won’t quite let you touch the stillness underneath. But that quiet—the voice within—is always there, like a soft current beneath the surface, waiting for space to rise.

Here’s a gentle practice you might try this morning:

1. Begin with the breath, not the thought.
Close your eyes and let your attention rest on the breath as it moves in and out. Not controlling it, just witnessing—like watching wind stir the curtains. With each exhale, imagine releasing some of that chatter. Not judging it. Just letting it go like petals on a stream.

2. Listen beneath the noise.
Rather than pushing thoughts away, try listening to what’s underneath them. What emotion is the chatter covering? Often, it’s trying to protect us from stillness or vulnerability. Recognizing that can gently quiet the noise, like a child comforted by being heard.

3. Invite the inner voice forward.
Ask a question – not with urgency, but with reverence. Something like, “What do I need to hear today?” Then, simply wait. The answer might not come in words. It might arrive as a sense of warmth, a phrase that softly echoes, or an image that lingers.

4. Ground in something beautiful.
Step outside if you can. Look at the morning light, even for a minute. Let beauty anchor you into presence. It has a way of dissolving clutter without needing to fix anything. Imagine being in a beautiful, peaceful place. Feel yourself there.

Your inner voice is wise and luminous. It just waits for you.  And even if your mind is a little noisy today, that doesn’t mean you’ve lost touch with your center. It’s still there, steady and true.
