Get Back on the Beam

A young woman balancing on a fence during a serene sunrise, exuding freedom and joy.

I came across this daily reading from Emmett Fox today.

“Most commercial flying is done on a radio beam. A directional beam is produced to guide the pilot to his destination, and if he keeps on this beam, he knows that he is safe, even if he cannot see around him for fog, or get his bearings in any other way. As soon as he gets off the beam in any direction he is in danger, and he immediately tries to get back on the beam.”[i]

When we are troubled, angered or otherwise out of sorts, we are off the beam.  This happens all the time when we allow the mind to conjure up all types of negativities. Remembering to be mindful of our thoughts and place God on our problems is the way that Emmett Fox recommended that we find peace.

Using Emmett’s idea of getting back to the beam is useful all the time. When I am worried about a decision and haven’t prayed, the next thing I should do is stop whatever I am doing and pray. Taking a deep cleansing breath, I invite God into this situation. Relieving myself of the anxiety, I claim the most benevolent outcome for all and ask God to inform me of what is mine to do.

I then lay aside my burden and concentrate on God. I am grateful.
