No Gimmicks, No Shortcuts on the Spiritual Path

Sometimes it’s quite amazing to me how instantaneously ads will appear on the computer screen while signed into the internet. Typically, when I just searched for something, the next thing I know, ads pop up everywhere from tags and buzz words. It causes my unsuspecting computer screen to light up with just the answer to my apparent need. Suddenly, I’ll see ads for tax software, advice, or solutions when I might have innocently queried “taxes.”  These response engines are just sitting there revving up and raring to go so they can barge into your personal space with false leads and promises.

I’ve been thinking how different this is from the teachings we offer at the spiritual center where I teach. The offerings are so simple and there are no gimmicks. You may attend in person or online, no strings attached. If a visitor appears and provides their contact information, they can expect that information to be kept confidential and if they wish, they can receive our weekly bulletin via email or not.

We teach principles that can make your load lighter and provide more peace and harmony in your life. There is no pressure for tithes. We don’t have a marketing trick ready to grab you. We simply offer fellowship, tips for gaining spiritual wisdom, love and understanding. You are free to participate at the level you choose. There are no unexpected phone calls, just and invitation to come back anytime that fits your schedule.

This is why I love being part of the Unity Worldwide Ministries® network. Since the early 1900s, Unity® has offered techniques for healing of body, mind, and spirit. When I was a young person, I had no idea that something like this existed. How incredible to experience the sacred space, music and practical tips on how to navigate our spiritual paths and lives.

Thomas Merton said, “The only problem with the spiritual life is that there are no gimmicks or shortcuts.”[i] To become spiritually centered and aware and live your life from that place takes a clear intention and commitment on your part to do so. There are no gimmicks or shortcuts, but the spiritual life unfolds for you in divine order once you begin clearing your path.

There is no prescribed amount of time that spiritual unfoldment takes place. All it takes is desire and commitment to follow the path toward light, love and wisdom. There are no gimmicks or shortcuts and the spiritual journey is to be experienced to its fullest. Take a deep breath and be grateful for this astonishing life. Love to all.

  1. I’m a long time member of Unity Gulfport, Rev. Judy Voght’s Center, and another Unity Gulfport friend and I were just talking about some of that just last week. We don’t have “a hook” as they say. There’s a lot of great things about that but one is the fact that when we’re there on a Sunday morning and the building is full of people and the energy is so amazing… It’s just cool to recognize that all those people are there because they sincerely want to be there. Not to escape a feeling of guilt, or to play some silly negotiation game with their Maker… none of that. They’re there because they get something out of being there. That’s why I show up every Sunday I’m in town. I’m fed at my local Unity Spiritual Center.
